| Sunday January 27, 2008: Rats Rally In Third To Avoid Elimination Series On Friday night, January 26th, the River Rats were on the road to face off against the Shallow Lake Crushers in a must win contest to end the regular season. The game had playoff implications for both clubs in hopes to avoid a best two-of-three elimination series against Drayton this weekend. A short bench meant that the Rats would have their hands full with a full bench on the other side of the ice. Both teams battled hard all game to keep it close; however, a questionable goal that seemed to be kicked in by the Crushers gave them a one goal lead after the first period. The solid play of goaltender Adam Clarke kept it a one goal game through one, noting that he faced a barrage of long shots in the period. Keeping positive the Rats came out with a decent effort in the second to keep things close when they tied the game up with a redirection by Brad Magoogan from a Bret Foisy dump in after keeping the puck in at the blue line. The tied score wouldn’t last long as the Crushers would net two more before the end of the period to go up on the Rats 3-1 at the end of the second. The second intermission was quiet with only a few speeches from our coach and captains for motivation. The Rats knew they needed a big third period from all players to prevail as winners. The third period was a fast paced action packed fury of hits, fights and nice goals. The Rats first goal of the period started from a great individual effort from Greg Rice to carry the puck from the defensive zone through the neutral zone dangling players left and right before getting hauled down at the Crushers net and getting a weak shot off. With a delayed penalty coming to the Crushers, Dan Sunberg popped in the rebound to get the Rats to within one. Only minutes later a beauty tic-tac-toe play capped off again by the Rats captain to tie things up at 3 a side. Not long after that goal, while short handed, Corey Roach snapped a short handed tally which would turn out tobe the game winner. The rest of the period saw the Crushers attempting to get at the Rats goalie by picking fights with him and crashing hard into the net. Clarke finished the game with a number of excellent saves taking away numerous good scoring chances. The Rats stepped up their defense to help preserve the win. The Rats would like to thank all their fans who made the drive over to Shallow Lake to cheer on their team, and hope that they will continue their support throughout the post season. As it stands today the post season looks like a best of seven quarter final series against the Milverton Four Wheel Drives that will start next weekend.
